秦时明月汉时关,万里长征人未还。

但使龙城飞将在,不教胡马度阴山。

‘Call of the Land (出塞)’, Lim Tze Peng’s calligraphic rendition of Wang Changling’s  (王昌龄) poem, strikes a balance between the lament of lost territories and the consolation of hope. The poem’s themes of resilience and hope are fitting for the exhibition Ink and Paper: 10 Years On,  which celebrates the 10th anniversary of Primz Gallery’s inaugural exhibition in 2016.  This showcase pays tribute to the resilience and legacies of pioneering Singaporean artists who worked with humble materials, and the enduring spirit and care of the Linda Neo and Albert Lim Collection.

Singapore’s modern art history began to take shape and flourish in the 1950s, with artists blending Asian traditions with Western styles to create a local identity. Following Singapore’s independence in 1965, art continued to evolve, incorporating abstraction with new mediums. The modern artists featured in this exhibition were practising during these early years of nation-building, and their works reflect this spirit of modernisation. Themes of Land, Labour, and Life are central to their art, capturing the toil of hard work in construction, changing landscapes, and nostalgia for rural life. This exhibition not only celebrates Singapore’s art history but also reimagines the foundations that built Primz Gallery over the past decade. By showcasing the works of these modern artists, Ink and Paper: 10 Years On highlights the importance of honest labour and the enduring legacy of Singapore’s artistic pioneers.

This exhibition is curated by Ivy Lam & Albert Lim.
